Personal Branding Simplified

Long before the computer was invented, Shakespeare held a pen, Elvis sang a song, and social media came to life; our ancestors walked this earth. They used to be called farmers, hunters, carpenters, fishermen; each of them had a unique job that defined who he was. Our ancestors knew that in order to survive they needed a unique surviving skill that distinguished them from others. An adjective used to precede their titles / skills, such as detailed oriented carpenter, creative farmer, amazing hunter, generous fisherman. These adjectives were called reputation.

Then life changed, computer was invented, reputation got a new dress code, and it became personal branding. Personal branding is a promise that you will deliver what you say, it is a perception in people’s mind, it is an authentic story about you, and what makes you exceptional. It is a commitment that you will live up to your own expectation, exceed people’s expectation of you, and deliver an emotional experience that nobody can match. Personal branding is a unique way to package your skills, knowledge, talents and experience to gift them to the world. It is your life; it is your passion, so go live it.

Our ancestors called reputation, we call it personal branding, and who knows what our kids will call it. To build impeccable brand; be human, be authentic, and true to your values, and your brand will come to life. Be professional at the workplace, be kind in your social life, and be generous with your time, money and knowledge. Personal branding is your key to find opportunities, don’t be afraid of embracing the best employment tool in the 21century.

What sets you apart from the 6 billions people that live on this earth?

Breaking news:

Marketing just got promoted; she became the queen of business. Location is still holding the crown as a king, but who knows for how long. Location is very important, but marketing is crucial. Your business can be in the best location in the world, but if nobody knows about it, nothing happens.

I’m not talking about advertising, I’m talking about marketing. I’m not talking about promoting, I’m talking about engaging. I’m not talking about selling; I’m talking about involving your customer in the process of buying. I’m not talking about making your customer’s mind, I’m talking about the ability to understand customers concerns, needs and demand and deliver those needs.

You don’t have to own a business to learn about marketing, teachers have to promote their teaching style to get a job; artists have to promote their techniques to find their market, and so on. If you are a college student, you have to market your knowledge in order to find a job. If you own a grocery store, you have to market your product in order to attract customers. If you a father you have to market you values to your kids so they can learn them. Let’s face it; we all market ourselves at one point or another. It is a different era, an era where visibility is as important as ability. I would like you today to tell me what you do in 15 seconds or less. Do not tell me you can not do that, if apple can pitch a billion dollar product in 15 seconds, why can’t you? Give me a reason to hire you, or use your product, I’m listening so start talking. Clock clicking 15.14.13…..1

Did you ever market yourself?

What is being safe?

Going to school is safe, cooking the same food our ancestor cooked is safe, building the same types of cars is safe, working 9 to 5 is safe, wasting our time watching TV is safe, fitting in is safe, sending our kids to sleep early is safe, and the list goes on. Being safe is easy, and it does not require any energy. It is safe.

I do not like being safe, being safe is too risky. Being safe is boring, dangerous and cancerous.

What is not safe?

Swimming with the sharks is not safe, going to the moon, writing a great book , driving a race car, raising kids , being creative , thinking outside the box , thinking win-win , delivering promises , walking the extra mile is not safe, and the list goes on.

I see parents that send their kids to sleep early rather than talk to them, employees who rather chit chat than doing their jobs, and teachers that teach for the test rather than preparing kids to be better individuals.  All these individuals want to be safe, but safe is not safe anymore.  I would like you to talk to your kids, teach them to be better individuals, and do your best at work, simply do things that matter.

Being creative is fun, adventurous, fruitful and beneficial. If you want to do things that matter, don’t be safe. If you want to raise great kids, don’t be safe. If you want to build a great business, don’t be safe. If you want to win the race to the top, don’t be safe. Your money in the safety box is safe, but it will never grow. Your ideas in your brain are safe, but they will never become reality. Live your dreams, bring your ideas to reality, and let go of your fears.

Are you safe?
